Dr. David E. Weissman is Professor Emeritus, Internal Medicine and Palliative Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is Board Certified in Medical Oncology, Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Dr. Weissman served as Director of Physician Education for the Wisconsin Cancer Pain Initiative from 1986-2000. In 1991 he began the 1st comprehensive palliative care program in Wisconsin and worked over the next 18+ years to integrate the principles of hospice and palliative medicine into academic medicine, both locally at MCW, and nationally. Dr. Weissman has served as medical director for two Milwaukee regional hospices and as medical director for a long-term care palliative care program.
In 1995 Dr. Weissman was awarded a Faculty Scholar Award in Death Education from the Project on Death in America. From 1997-2004 Dr. Weissman directed the National Residency End of Life Education Project, helping 390 residency programs develop a palliative care curriculum. As part of this project, he began the acclaimed, Fast Facts and Concepts and founded EPERC, End of Life/Palliative Education Resource Center. From 2006-2010 he founded and directed the Medical School Palliative Care Education Project a national effort to help medical schools develop required clinical experiences in palliative care for medical students along with faculty development programs.
In 2003, the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Palliative Care Program was designated one of six United States Palliative Care Leadership Center’s by the Center to Advance Palliative Care. Between 2003 and 2010 Dr Weissman and his team have trained over 150 palliative care programs, helping them start, sustain and grow their programs.
Dr. Weissman received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine in 2005. Dr. Weissman was the Founding Editor of the Journal of Palliative Medicine.
Since 2007 he was worked as a consultant to the Center to Advance Palliative Care for educational product development and strategic planning. He is the Associate Director of The Program to Inform and Improve the Quality of ICU Palliative Care (I-QUIP) in Collaboration with Dr. Judy Nelson.
Dr. Weissman maintains a small clinical palliative care practice at Froedtert Hospital/Medical College of Wisconsin, focusing the bulk of efforts on consulting to hospitals, health care systems and academic medical centers wishing to sustain and grown their palliative care programs.
